Are you running your small business, or is your small business running you?
For many entrepreneurs, the dream of business ownership starts with the pursuit of freedom—financial freedom, time freedom, and creative freedom. But somewhere along the line, the hustle takes over. You find yourself grinding day and night, and instead of building a life you love, you realize you have built yourself a cage.
In Episode 13 of the Permission to Flourish podcast, host J. Cornell sits down with Jason McKenzie, a serial entrepreneur, marketing strategist, and creator of the Small Business Big Visibility podcast. Jason is the founder of Boise WEB and the Grazora business freedom movement, and he is on a mission to help one million entrepreneurs break free from the “business trap.”
If you are facing business burnout, struggling to delegate, or simply want to redesign your entrepreneurial journey, this episode is packed with the actionable strategies you need.
Jason’s entrepreneurial spirit was baked in from the very beginning. Growing up in Idaho as one of 17 children, he learned early on how to navigate chaos, solve problems, and create opportunities. His first ventures included selling paper airplanes to his siblings, and by the age of 11, he had already launched a lawn care business.
Interestingly, it was during this early lawn care venture that Jason learned his very first lesson in delegation and systems. Terrified of asking adults for money, he hired his younger brother specifically to handle the collections. It was a simple solution to a personal fear, but it laid the groundwork for a lifelong understanding of how to build a team that complements your weaknesses.
Like many driven founders, Jason initially built his success the hard way: pushing, grinding, and relentlessly chasing growth. He achieved the success he thought he wanted, only to realize he was completely trapped in the day-to-day operations.
The turning point came during a pivotal, week-long vacation. Forced to completely unplug, Jason had to surrender to the reality of his situation, adopting the mindset: “If the business burns down, it burns down.” It didn’t burn down. Instead, that space away from the daily grind allowed him to fundamentally restructure his life and work. Through his platform, Grazora, Jason now teaches small business owners how to intentionally reshape their operations so their businesses actually support their lives, rather than consuming them.
A powerful philosophy Jason shares in this episode is the concept of the growth ceiling. Simply put: a business will rarely outgrow its owner.
If you are living in a cage within your own mind—limited by your self-belief, identity, or mindset—your business will hit a wall. Success in business is completely meaningless if it costs you your health, your family, or your identity. Jason explains why aligning your conscious and subconscious mind is the ultimate strategy for scaling a business sustainably.
What does it mean to give yourself Permission to Flourish? For Jason, it means recognizing that humans are not designed to be perfect. We are meant to be on an adventurous journey where we have the freedom to fail, learn, and grow.
Jason challenges entrepreneurs to completely eliminate the phrase “I can’t” from their vocabulary and replace it with a much more powerful alternative: “I can’t yet.” When navigating hard times, Jason leans on two grounding mantras that keep him moving forward:
“If God led me to it, God will lead me through it.”
“I’m not dead yet, so all the hard things in my past haven’t killed me, and this one won’t either.”
If you are ready to stop settling, escape the overwhelm, and step into a life of genuine freedom, you do not want to miss Episode 13 of the Permission to Flourish podcast.
